History of EDNA
Essendon District Netball Association: A History of Community and Development
Our Origins
The Essendon District Netball Association, formerly known as Victorian Baptist Churches of Christ and Affiliated Churches Netball Association, was first established in 1946, making it one of the oldest predominantly female sporting associations in Australia.
Clubs from all over the Melbourne metropolitan area – from Sandringham to the Yarra Valley to Macleod to Williamstown – participated in organised netball (called “women’s basketball” until the early 1960s) competition for many decades.
Over time, with the growth in participant numbers, our member clubs spawned their own associations and organised play in geographical regions, thereby fostering the development of netball in Melbourne.
Since the late 1970s, EDNA has been based at Aberfeldie Primary School (Moonee Valley - Essendon) with various and significant developments in facilities, organisational structures, club membership, and vision.
A recent move to Riverside Netball Centre has increased our capacity for future growth.
