UMPIRES CLINIC - FIRST STEP TO LEARNING TO UMPIRE

Our Learning to Umpire Clinic is a welcoming and supportive program designed for anyone interested in starting their umpiring journey.

The clinic provides a safe and encouraging environment where beginner umpires can learn, practice and develop under the guidance of experienced mentors and umpire developers.

Whether you are a player, parent, supporter or community member, our clinic is designed to help you build confidence and develop the skills required to become an umpire.

When and Where?

📅 Every Saturday Competition day

🕒 3:20pm

📍 Essendon District Netball Association – Courts 9 or 10

What Will You Learn?

During the clinic, participants will progressively develop:

Fundamental umpiring techniques
Recognition of netball infringements
Correct application of penalties
How to set and manage penalties during live play
Positioning and movement on court

Learning is practical, progressive and tailored to each umpire’s stage of development.

Pathway to Getting on Court

The clinic is the primary pathway for new umpires to develop the skills and confidence required to begin umpiring matches.

As umpires progress through the clinic:

Mentors will observe, guide and provide ongoing feedback;
Umpire development will be monitored over time;
Mentors will advise the Umpire Coordinators when an umpire is ready to commence game appointments;
New umpires will initially be supported by a mentor while umpiring matches; and
Game allocations will occur when suitable mentor support and appropriate timeslots are available.

EDNA is committed to ensuring new umpires are introduced to umpiring in a safe, positive and supportive environment.

Who Can Attend?

The clinic is open to:

Brand new umpires
Current players interested in umpiring
Parents and family members
Community members wanting to become involved in netball
Existing umpires looking to further develop their skills

No experience is required.

Communication and Registration

While registration is not required to attend the clinic, we strongly encourage all prospective umpires to complete the 2026 EDNA Umpire/Staff Registration Form before attending.

The registration process will:

Guide you through important online learning opportunities;
Provide EDNA with emergency contact information;
Connect you to our communication system via the Time Umpire App; and
Help prepare you for future game appointments.

Please note that while the online learning modules do not need to be completed before attending the clinic, they must be completed before being appointed to umpire matches.
