UMPIRES
Umpire Registration
Before getting started, all umpires must register with the Association by completing the 2026 EDNA Umpire/Staff Registration Form.
Registration is required for all umpires, mentors and officials participating in EDNA competitions.

Umpire Development
EDNA is committed to developing and supporting umpires at all stages of their umpiring journey.

Our Umpire Coaches and Umpire Mentors work across all EDNA competitions, providing feedback, mentoring and development opportunities to help umpires improve their skills and confidence.

Umpire Coaches, and some Umpire Mentors, complete feedback and evaluation forms for the umpires they work with. This information is used to:
-
Assist with umpire development and progression;
-
Support game allocations;
-
Identify strengths and areas for improvement; and
-
Help umpires achieve their individual goals.

Where appropriate, feedback will be shared directly with umpires to support their ongoing development.

If you would like to familiarise yourself with the feedback and evaluation process, please view the 2026 Umpire Feedback/Evaluation Form.

To ensure transparency regarding the support available to umpires, you are also welcome to review the Position Descriptions for both Umpire Coaches and Umpire Mentors.

Umpire Scheduling
In 2026, EDNA will continue to use the Time Umpire App for all umpire allocations across all competitions.

Access to the app is provided once you have completed the 2026 EDNA Umpire/Staff Registration Form.

To assist with timely allocations, all umpires are required to enter their availability before the following deadlines:

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Have to Wear a Green Shirt?
Yes. All non-badged umpires are required to wear a green shirt when umpiring in any EDNA competition, regardless of whether they umpire at other competitions.

The green shirt helps identify newer and developing umpires and allows players, coaches, spectators, mentors and EDNA officials to recognise that the umpire is still learning and progressing through their umpiring journey.

Green shirts are provided by EDNA once you are allocated to your first match.

I’ve Done Everything – When Will I Get on Court?
Once you have:
-
Registered as an umpire;
-
Completed all required courses and forms; and
-
Attended an EDNA Umpire Clinic,
you will become eligible for game allocations.

New umpires are allocated matches once our Umpire Clinic facilitators advise the Umpire Coordinators and Allocations Officers that the umpire is ready to take the court.

Our priority is to ensure new umpires have a positive, safe and supported introduction to umpiring. Rather than placing umpires into games before they are ready, we take a structured approach that allows them to develop confidence and skills in an appropriate environment.

There is no set timeframe for receiving your first allocation, as every umpire progresses at a different pace.

Allocations also depend on the support available on a particular match day, including:
-
Suitable mentor availability;
-
Appropriate game levels for development; and
-
Opportunities that provide a safe and positive learning experience.

We appreciate your patience and are committed to ensuring every new umpire is set up for success when they take the court.

When will I get my badge?
Achieving an umpire badge is not based on a set timeframe. Instead, it is based on demonstrating the competencies and skills required under the Netball Australia Umpire Accreditation Framework.
Throughout your umpiring journey, EDNA Umpire Coaches and Umpire Mentors will provide ongoing feedback and assess your development. Once they believe you are consistently demonstrating the required competencies, they may recommend that you progress towards badge testing.
Before being tested, umpires will undergo independent reviews to ensure they are performing at the required standard. Badge testing is then conducted by an accredited panel in accordance with Netball Victoria and Netball Australia guidelines.
As every umpire develops at a different pace, the time it takes to achieve a badge will vary from person to person. Our focus is on ensuring umpires are confident, capable and well-prepared before progressing to the next stage of their accreditation pathway.

When Do Umpires Get Paid?
In most circumstances, umpires are paid on the Monday following the week in which they umpired.

Please note that payment may be delayed if registration requirements have not been completed, banking details are missing or incorrect, or there are issues requiring verification of allocations or attendance.

If you have concerns regarding a payment, please contact us immediately.

Why Haven’t I Been Allocated Every Week?
Umpire allocations depend on a range of factors, including your availability, experience level, mentor availability, competition requirements and the number of umpires available on a particular match day. It is also important your availability is entered into the app as per the scheduling process above. If you do not provide availability, you may not be appointed to matches.

While EDNA aims to provide umpires with regular opportunities to umpire, allocations every week cannot be guaranteed. The number of games allocated to an umpire may vary throughout the season based on the factors listed above.

When making allocations, EDNA also considers an umpire’s development needs and seeks to place umpires on matches that are appropriate for their current experience and skill level. This helps ensure umpires are supported in a positive learning environment and continue to develop their confidence and umpiring abilities.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to balance development opportunities, competition requirements and available appointments across all competitions.
